VAUX Kathleen "Kay"

Kathleen (known as Kay) Joanne Vaux was born in 1921 at Narrogin.
Her mother came out from England when she was about 18 months old and her father came out when he was two in about c1914.
Kay moved to Ongerup later in life, however her family lived in the Porongorups when Kay was born.
The family was farming mostly potatoes with some apples and pears.
They had about 300 acres and their produce generally was sent to Mount Barker.

BROWN BORONIA             #1

Kay can remember as a child going to Albany by horse and sulky and it would take all day to get there.
"Generally the dog and cat and everything came along with us“ she said.
"We could stop halfway at the King River for lunch. When we got to Albany we would shop there and stay the night and come back again the next day”.
The family also worked together to collect and sell boronia.
Kay remembers picking boronia from on the property.
They would go to the swamps on Sundays to pick bags full of boronia, collecting it in chaff bags.
They would then go home and put it in the wash troughs where they would comb it.
Kay’s father had made combs with every second tooth missing and Kathleen said: “We would sit all scraping the boronia stems to get the blossoms off.
Only the blossoms were needed for scent making so we would fill the bags full of these and send them away.
This was around 1924 or 1925”.
